Karate ( 空 手 / 唐 手 ) is a martial art developed in the Ryukyu Islands in what is now Okinawa, Japan. It developed from the indigenous martial arts of Ryukyu Islands called te ( 手 ), literally "hand" in Okinawan, under the influence of Chinese martial arts. Karate is a striking art using punching, kicking, knee strikes, elbow strikes and open hand techniques such as knife-hands, spear-hands, and palm-heel strikes. In some styles, grappling, throws, joint locks, restraints, and various other techniques are also taught. Historically it was passed from master to student in secrecy within families and villages. Anko Itosu (1832-1915) one of the legendary early masters and true innovators, is known for bringing Karate out of secrecy into the public and was responsible for introducing the art into the Okinawan school system around 1902. The benefits of Karate training were found to exceed that of the combative principles however and proved to have a profound effect on physical health.
